Artist's Comments

An entry for =dragonwolfstryde's contest. The cotnest has two themes. I chose to pick one of her characters and draw it older.

After reading about two sentences of her description for the contest, I had a sudden vibrent image of an old character sitting under a tree, playing chess with him/herself. So I looked through her characters, and chose this one, Rai Darkwaters.

He's all old in this picture. His fur's turned all silvery, and he's grown a little beard, and aquired a couple little nicks and scars. Appologies to Stryde for the costume change. I figured after however many years, those shorts and bandanna of his would be in tatters. Besides, I thought the long pants and scarf fit the picture better.

Dunno where I got the idea for the comic-like style of this. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. And I had a lot of fun with that hand in the upper left corner, anyway. I thought it was a very good hand.

Yeah, I cheated with the leaves and grass. Aside from that, it was excessive use of paintbrush, smudge and blur tools. As usual =P

This is The most favorite Picture I have ever seen of yours. It's marvolous. Everything from the Movement and Life in the character to The simplistic detail of the tree. It's amazing. I can't stop staring at it, honestly.

I absoloutly love the Zoomed in hand on the chess piece. I hope to see more art from you, because it always strikes me in a way that i can never quite explain.

D'aw, thanks! I was going for a more meloncholy feel with this piece, and I think it ended up a little more peaceful-feeling than meloncholy, but I think I got close.

I don't know where the idea for the hand in the corner came from. I'm pretty happy with it, though. I thought it was a nice touch.

Most of the time using photoshop brushes make it look... half assed but you did a good job pulling it all together by adding in your own bg stuff like the tree trunk and table. I really like what you did with the character. He seems really calm, and full of wisdom, lol! My only thought is maybe in the last panel there could be a little more change between the big panel and the last panel, just so it doesn't seem so much like just a zoom in.

Yeah, I know. Originally, I was gonna draw the main section a lot smaller, but it came out bigger, and you know how it is when something looks good and you don't want to erase it just to draw it smaller or whatever. So, since he looks more alert in the last panel, like he heard something or somesuch, my spur-of-the-moment logic is that it's him looking up from the chess board for some reason.

Wow Nora, y'know what? this has to be the very best piece in your gallery. Tehee. everyone's got a liking for little Rai. =D Anyways. I really like that you captured his demon side over his feline side as the way he grew, and that he lost that childhood energy. Poor rai. He's playing chess by himself. Oh, and that little detail of the leaf over the hand captured time well. Great job, I love it. :3 Thank you for entering! <3

O' course! I had a lot of fun with this piece. While looking through the characters youhad for this section of your contest, I thought Rai was just perfect for what I had in mind. And I just had to give him the little beard.
